Grade 5

Grade 5 Language Arts

Fifth grade language arts consists of the introduction of basic grammar, usage, and mechanics. Fundamental knowledge of the eight parts of speech, sentence analysis, capitalization, and punctuation is the major focus.


The course emphasizes the writing process of pre-writing, drafting, revising, proofreading, and publishing. The applications of writing skills are demonstrated through narrative, persuasive and creative writing. The students analyze and evaluate the effectiveness of their written work assessing strengths and need for improvement based on the six traits of effective writing: ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency and conventions. Poetry and figurative language are also explored.


 

Grade 5 Reading

This course encompasses an in-depth analysis and investigation of novels and short stories. Texts explored in class include Saint Francis of the Seven Seas, Island of the Blue Dolphins, and The River. There is an emphasis on spelling skills and the building of vocabulary through reading. The students utilize word recognition and word meaning skills to read and comprehend text, such as context clues and word origins; roots, prefixes, and suffixes of words. Students are required to independently read two novels per quarter and produce written book summaries which demand attention to sentence structure, grammar, mechanics, and usage. Literature circles and other collaborative learning activities enable students to work cooperatively. Oral communication skills develop as students generate oral presentations throughout the year, including a presentation of a researched topic related to Island of the Blue Dolphins.
 

Grade 5 Mathematics

This level of mathematics curriculum emphasizes developing competency in the basic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with whole numbers, decimals, and fractions.   Specific topics covered within the basic operations include: place value, estimation, compare and order, exponents, variables, order of operations, prime and composite numbers, greatest common factors, and least common multiples.  Data analysis and interpretation are explored through solving problems involving range, median, mean, and mode.  Also included in the fifth grade curriculum are problem solving strategies and practice of word problems.
 

Grade 5 Science

An introduction to the world of science and the tools scientists use will begin each fifth grader’s year.  The course will explore scientific thinking and the development of the skills necessary for scientific thinking important for a solid science education. It will include critical thinking and research skills that will support scientific inquiry.  The course of study will also explore Earth’s weather and the various factors that cause it including heat energy, air pressure, air currents, and moisture.  Classes will finish the year studying the structure and function of cells, body systems, and heredity.  This will serve as a solid base for later studies in biology.
 

Grade 5 Geography

Topics covered in the course are principles of geography, map skills, graph and chart reading and interpretation, and the areas:  United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, South America, and a world overview.  Projects include a long-term project about the United States in which students choose a state and, following guidelines, present a project including posters, reports, maps and artifacts.  Other projects will be assigned concerning the history, culture and geography of Latin America.


We devote ten minutes of class each day to researching and producing maps.  By finding locations, coloring and outlining maps, students will familiarize themselves with geographic regions, both local and worldwide.  We will use on-line map skill programs as well.  We are especially happy to have both new textbooks and Smart Room technology to use this year.


 

Grade 5 Religion

During the year students will explore the essence of Catholicism and learn about some of the people who lived teir lives in the service of God. We will review the elements of our church and some of its traditions. We review the prayers of the Catholic Church and the importance of a good prayer life. Each student will study the life of a saint and learn from them about the life we are called to. We read the parables of Jesus and discuss their lessons and how stories can help us learn the messages of Jesus. We will explore the mass learning about the liturgy, it history, art, music and its place in our lives today. We will look at the Seven Sacraments, their history, symbolisms and importance.
 

Grade 5 Music

The class meets twice weekly.  Students will be singing one day of the week and playing a pitched instrument on the second day. Students will be expected to the have courage to participate and explore music in a hands-on atmosphere. A folder will be checked as part of the student’s grade. Songs will be sung from many genres. Small group presentations for the class will be included. Connection to other disciplines will be made through for example: The periodic table of elements will be sung in Grade Five, the study of the pentatonic scale and compositions in that mode will be performed in connection with the sixth grade Asian unit.
 

Grade 5 Visual Arts

This is a survey art course, which emphasizes studio production. Within this context, students will apply media, techniques, and processes in creating their own artwork.  Students will identify and use the elements of design: line, shape, texture and color. Within the drawing unit, students will explore light and shadow, space, and some aspects of perspective. In addition, the students will explore art appreciation and art criticism.   Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton (American Regionalists), W.C. Escher, Aboriginal Artists are usually studied in 5th grade as well as other types of art/artists as it relates to their studio art. Mediums include: pencil, colored pencil, oil and dry pastels, markers, tempera paint, watercolors and paper mache. Students are given home assignments at least once each marking period.
 

Grade 5 Physical Education

A comprehensive program that includes instructional content that promotes the concept of individual student physical growth. The main emphasis will be the concepts and strategies of team sports. The introduction of the various components that are part of an active, healthy lifestyle will also be included.
 

Grade 5 Technology Class

A beginner’s class that introduces the students to computers assuming that they have basic computing skills. The class would be classified as introduction to computers covering the operational basics such as: powering up and down, computer familiarization, practice handling the mouse, keyboard, menu and tool bars, file management basics, Microsoft Office Suite, Internet research and saving to different forms of media. There is also an emphasis on learning to keyboard properly. These are the basic computer skills students will need to know for later in their school careers.
